Dear Parents,

I grow increasing proud of our students and faculty with every passing year.  With the support of non-instructional staff, parents, community leaders, and district leaders, our students and their teachers achieve excellence.  The state of Florida has recognized Christa McAuliffe as an “A+”  school for five consecutive years. It will be our seventh “A+” since 1998. We also made a “YES” on the Adequate Learning Gains (AYP) for No Child Left Behind.  This is our second year of earning 100%.

At Christa McAuliffe we continue to focus on all academic areas, integrating technology into the curriculum, character education and physical fitness.  All students will receive a minimum of 155 minutes of physical education a week, in keeping with the new State Statute.

The staff and I are looking forward to the start of a new school year!!!   The classrooms are prepared and new books are in and ready for your children.  We appreciate your support of our school and look forward to working together with you to provide excellence in the education of your children. Working together we can make this a successful year.

Below is an update on the attendance and promotion policies:

Attendance Policy:

1. A student who is absent more than nine (9) days within a semester (August 20th- January 11th   is the first semester and January 12th – June 2nd  is the second semester) will not receive a passing grade for the semester.  Absences due to illness or injury are not included if the are excused with a doctors note.
Kindergarten students must be in school for 162 days as criteria for progression to the     first grade.
2. A student must be in attendance for at minimum of 4 hours of instructional time to be considered present each day.
3. Students who arrive after 8:00 AM will need to have a tardy pass before they can report to their classrooms.  Parents must accompany students into the office to get the tardy slip.

Please read the pages relating to attendance in the Parent Student Handbook.

Promotion Policy:

Students must meet the promotional guidelines as stated in the Student Progression Plan.  There have been some changes as the State has passed new Bills relating to promotion guidelines.  These will be published in our newsletters once we receive the finalized document.
Our goal is to have all students on grade level in reading and math. Promotion guidelines require that students be on grade level in reading prior to being promoted to fourth grade.  However, students not reading on grade level at the end of any grade may be retained.  Students must master other curriculum area and make passing grades on their report card.  Sixth grade students who receive an “F” on their report card in any subject area will be retained.

We will work with parents to provide every opportunity to get students on grade level.  These include:

1. Providing after school academic support
2. Providing flexible reading groups in 1st- 6th grades
3. Providing PNP.   The classroom teachers will design an PNP to address any child’s developmental needs. Parents will be notified and asked to conference with their child’s teacher if this is a need.

Students in grades 3rd – 6th will be assessed by the FCAT at the end of this year and those results will be used as well as other factors as promotion decisions are made.

Our School Improvement goals

One of our main goals is student achievement. We will continue to work on all academic areas, focusing on reading, math, science and writing.  We will continue to implement the programs that have increased our students’ achievement in reading, math and writing.  These include:  The After School Academic Support Program, Scott Foresman Reading Links, Accelerated Reader Program, and the Scott Foresman reading program.  We will also continue to have the SIT Reading Lab for students who need more intensive reading instruction. Please continue to set a time aside, everyday, for your child to read.  There are many excellent books in our library and at the Public Library.  If your child is not reading yet, please read to them.  With your help we can increase our students’ literacy.
Another goal is to increase student attendance.  We need your support in this area. Please try to arrange vacations and other travel around student vacation days and holidays. When students are not here they miss instruction and it is very difficult for them to catch up.  We understand that children are sick and must be out at times.   Please make sure, if your child is absent, to call and send in a written excuse.  Students who miss more than 9 days a semester will not pass for that semester.
Discipline continues to be one of our main goals.  We implemented our school-wide Life Skills Plan, ten years ago. The number of students sent to the office for breaking school rules has continued to decrease. We will continue to involve our students in Peer Mediation, Conflict Resolution, Say “NO to Bullying” program and other Character Education programs. Please continue to encourage your child to bring home a “Life Skill” award.
Please feel free to attend our School Advisory Counsel meetings.  They are held on Tuesday afternoons, once a month.  Our first meeting is September 4th  from 2:40 PM – 3:20 PM., in the media center. We are looking for parents to serve on this Counsel.  Please contact the front office if you are interested in serving.

I look forward to making this a successful school year. Working together we can make it happen!!!!!

Sincerely,

Carol Roddenberry
Principal

Free and Reduced Meals

The cost of lunch each day can add up to a lot of money especially if you have more than one child in school. Check to see if you qualify for a free or reduced price for meals.  There have been some changes in the income levels to qualify.  Students who qualify for free or reduced meals are kept confidential.
Please make sure you fill out the application that came home with your child today.  The income chart is on the application and we encourage you to complete the form to determine if you qualify for free/reduced priced meals.  This can mean big savings to you and your family.
